No one is safe and immune to domestic abuse and violence. It is the most difficult situation where a person talks about and to escape from it. It is a hidden truth lying under the cover of representation; this representation is aimed to be fit in the structure of a perfect and happy society. This structure is very well polished from outside but in-depth there are many stories fighting to save the self-respect and dignity from violation and abuse. This essay is a reflection of a case study that represents many acts of domestic abuse, and that resulting from the physical harm to the victim (Gov.uk; 2018).
"From every wound, there is a scar, and every scar tells a story. A story that says, -I survived." ? Fr. Craig Scott
Domestic abuse is not only that represents the marks of violence on the face or body, but a violence that breaks the person from inside and let them stay in dark for a long time is also an abuse that is count in domestic abuse. Chris and Deborah were mature and both were in an intimate relationship with their understanding. Behavioral economics defines that a human has many personalities and it is his decision on how to react in any situation, at the starting stage Chris was calm and romantic person (Cottrill 2016). Situations changed after 2 years where Chris become a violent personality abusing Deborah in many ways
Deborah was directly facing physical abuse in this case and many times. Chris use to slap her, hit her with objects, which she used to cover with the makeup. Although Chris after every act promised her not to do it again, and to attain a session of psychological development but his nature remains the same. The major incident that took place was at the time of her pregnancy that results in her severe injuries and blood loss from her body (Lloyd & Ramon 2017).
Any kind of act affecting a person mentally, this includes emotional blackmailing, torture, threatening, harassing and making feel afraid to do anything. Abuse is characterized by a person exposing another person. Besides, the behavior that results in stress, tension and any kind of mental health challenges to another person. This case study represents many times where Deborah faced mental stress, emotional challenges, and tension, as many times she faces challenges to find her asserts, she feels uncomfortable in a social gathering. All represents that Chris has abused her deeply and that made her lose her self-confidence.
Threatening or forcefully making a person to intimate is included in this kind of abuse, a person has right to deny his or her partner to make sexual intercourse, or making sexual relation without intention is a kind of rape that affect the emotions and dignity of a person. There are no direct signs of sexual abuse because both had an understanding of family planning.
To nip financial abuse in the bud, it is a kind of abuse that is overlooked many times; it is also a common type of abuse. It is common in those relations where parties have a strong bond of understanding and trust, many people have the wrong intention behind the good relationship. For example, bank frauds, fake signatures, hiding details of bank transactions, misusing identities, and many other (Robinson 2017). Chris offered Deborah to open a joint account to pay the loan and rent of the house, but he used to be vacant when she asked him anything related to bank transactions. This represented that he was using her financial assets by torturing her in any manner.
This kind of abuse is related to violate dignity and self-respect of a person, having a relationship with one person not authorized other to insult or make fun with the intention to insult or prove others depending on one. Making bad fun of any person, insulting at the public place or behaving rudely that represents the abusive nature of a person (Graca 2017). During a party, Chris, insulted Deborah to make her feel insulted in from of his friends in a party that made her uncomfortable but people in that party remain silent and did not say anything to Chris. This mere silence represents that society takes it as the right f powerful person to insult others whom he thinks is depending on him (Breckenridge 2018).
These all incidents present in the case represents that Chris was a violent person and he used to abuse Deborah, many incidents also represented that Deborah has not equal rights to take decision in his life. For example, Chris told her to expend family, without asking her consent, Chris took the decision to open a joint account to fulfill this purpose he behaved in a gentle manner with her and Bonanzo as well. Chris tortured her on doubt of talking with his friend with smiling and with the wrong intention at last Chris beaten her very curly for not accepting his decision to put the Bonanzo down in the room. These all were part of theories and kind of the domestic abusing disturbing the life of Deborah but she remain silent because she was in a relation of love and affection, this made the situation very critical for her day-by-day.
The most common reason behind the increased cases of domestic abuses is the silence of the victim from the very first incident, speaking against the violence can help the victim but this is a bitter truth of society that they accept it as an part of their life (Robinson, Pinchevsky & Guthrie 2016).
Any kind of abuse or violence is a criminal offense because it led to many issues and risk to the health that causes long-term disease, death, or any mental health challenges. According to the ONS statics, 4.2% of males and 7.9% of females suffered any kind of domestic abuse in England and Wales. There are many risks found associated with the health of Deborah due to the violence she faced during her relationship with Chris. As discussed below;
The physical torture to the Deborah is possible to lead severe injuries causing long term issues to her health, any injury to the eye, ear or any body part that remains untreated from the medical treatment.
The most important impact of a slap affect the human personality, beliefs, and self-respect, Deborah was an independent girl use to manage his professional and personal life and very soft by nature. Abusing from her husband affected her emotions and beliefs that are discussed in the case that she uses to face challenges in remember minor things (Breckenridge 2018).
Domestic abuse is very cruel; beating a person mercilessly can cause death to the person, any injury that makes a person disabled for a lifetime. Beating by the heavy objects, throwing from the stairs and emotional abuse can disturb her at the level that she can think to commit suicide. There are many examples of suicide committed by the victims of domestic abuse.
Children in domestic violence whether born or infant, child or adult faces a serious impact on the parent's conflicts and parenting in the domestic abuse. When Chris tortured Deborah, she was pregnant first time, and due to falling from stairs, she faced bleeding. This bleeding was possible to lead the miscarriage of her child as well as can affect her pregnancy for the future.
There are many cases where victims select to leave the house and live an unstable life, which leads to many criminal activities as well because being homeless is very challenging because a person faces safety issues, poverty and health issues. Deborah faces many times situations where she might be thinking to leave everything and get out of those situations.
Domestic Abuse is an issue very challenging and critical, many organizations are working in the government and non-government sectors to manage the activities of domestic abuse and to prevent the victim from any health issues. Domestic abuse is a criminal offense and there are many legal remedies available for the victim to claim punishment against the offenders.
The government in the present time is very concerned about the domestic abuse cases, due to the increased number of cases of deaths, suicide and mental cases due to domestics violence, there are many counseling and development centers. These counseling centers can help the victims and offenders both to identify the issues and suggest the solution. These counseling sessions focus on the psychological factors and take the personality test to determine the issues with their behavior and treat them accordingly (Robinson, Pinchevsky & Guthrie 2016).
At the very first stage, while Chris started calling Deborah with insulting names, she needed to take the help of a counselor to identify the personality and behavioral challenges with Chris, but she ignored that and gave a chance of development to domestic abuse.
There are many legal procedures and helplines are available to treat the abuse as a criminal offense, filing a complaint in the police stations and taking strict action against physical and emotional abuse was available for Deborah. She was an independent girl and she needs to understand the importance of her dignity and self-respect at her first. Speaking against the wrong is essential to prevent the issues.
The important opportunity for the victim in an abuse case is to prevent self from the wrong, abuse affect deep in mental and emotional stage, and taking a step against wrong for the first time was important for the Deborah. She needs to understand her values and dignity and making herself dependent on the other is not a solution taking a step against violence with legal proceedings is effective and right.
Domestic violence largely affects the victims at the mental stage, a person in the mature age understand self to be capable of taking decision and harassment or abuse affect one negatively. Abusive behavior is very difficult to manage and solve the issues between the victim and the offender is very challenging. In the case of Chris and Deborah, after she faced an injury to her pregnancy, inter-agency have to deal with many challenges (Robinson 2017). These challenges are
The most challenging situation with inter-agency is related to reveal the truth from the parties because sometimes victims hide truth due to fear of the offender or being abused by the offender again. Besides, offenders hide the truth to save him.
As in the given case, Chris lied to the hospital administration and inter-agency about falling of Deborah, he claimed that she falls due to Bonanzo came in her feet while crossing the stairs and Deborah was not effectively able to speaks. Hence, effective counseling of Deborah was required from the Inter-agency.
Victims in case of domestic abuse face depression and demotivation, this sometimes made them commit suicide, hence motivating the victim, and supporting her with emotional support with counseling skills.
Many times offenders in the case behave aggressively, they hide the truth and tries to prove them right and innocent, by lying. As in the given case study, Chris lied to save him from blame and there was the possibility of misbehavior from Chris, hence this requires effective handling of the offender challenges.
After the evaluation inter-agency needs to fine weather to go with legal proceedings or take a mutual separation of the bond. If victims are not assured about it and they think emotionally in the case this made the situation very challenging. Hence handling the case of domestic abuse is very challenging and risky for the counseling and inter-agency but prevention of such action is necessary from the victim themselves at the initial stage of abuse.
