Mary Rowlandson was the wife of a Minister and a colonial woman who as captures by the Native Americans of the country during King Phillip’s war in the country. She was held hostage for a period of eleven days in the country before demanding of the ransom for the release of the Rowlandson at the price of twenty pounds. The whole incident of her capture as well as her release from her captors is well recorded in the book that was written by her called The Captivity of Mary Rowlandson.
Lancaster, the area in the Massachusetts where Rowlandson and her husband had been living came under the attacks from that of the Narragansett, Wampanoag as well as the Nashaway/Nipmuc Indians which was led by their leader named Monoco. The native Indians killed and captured a large number of people who were taken captive by them which included Mary Rowlandson as well as her four children. As stated by Rowlandson (55), it was while in the captivity of the Native Indians that Sarah, the four year old daughter of Mary Rowlandson, died from the wounds that she received during the attack and the capture by the Native Indians. Ii is known from the texts itself that both Rowlandson as well as her children were forced by the Indians to accompany them to the other areas so that themselves could escape from the English soldiers themselves. The texts also tell the readers about the extreme conditions that she had suffered at the hands of the Indians and the ransom that was demanded by the Indians in order to release her and her children so that they could go back to their families. The ransom of 20 pounds were raised by the women of Boston while the ransom was paid to the Indians by John Hoar of Concord (Rowlandson: 50).
Thus, it is from the essay itself that the that the readers get to know the facts about Mary Rowlandson and the way in which she was captured by the Indians and the way in which she was released by the Indians as part of the ransom that was paid to them by the Government of the English people. Thus, the texts also tell the audience about the history of King Philip’s wart and the outcome which resulted from the war itself. This is exactly what the history is about.
In the poem, “To My Loving and Dear Husband” by the author Anne Bradstreet, the poet is speaking to her husband, where she expresses her love for her husband. In the poem, she tells her readers that she loves her husband more than any other man that she had ever loved in her life. The readers find that in the poem itself, the author’s love for her husband expresses the raw emotion that is found in the love poems that the author herself has written (Pietros, 50).
In the poem, itself, the author has compared the love of her husband with that of the gold and the people of the East End who were believed to be richer than the rest of the people of the country. The poet begins the poem by stating that she considers her husband and herself as one being i.e. they are united. She informs the readers that she loves her husband so much that she should search in heaven for something that is equal to the love that she professes for her husband. As stated by Pietros (50), then the poet shifts to a spiritual perspective where she says that the since men and women who marry need to be married since they are young need to be together till the time they are dead, but the author says that since the love she has for her husband is so strong, she believes that they will be together even after they die in heaven.
In the poem, the poet had made use of the theme of love to symbolize the various ways in which she loves her husband. This love for her husband has been expressed in the poem by the poet by using various symbols of love in both as well as the immortal areas. Through all these references by the author of the poem, it is clear that the that the author of the poem really loves her husband so much that she had decided to write a poem explaining to the readers about the significance of her love for her husband through her poem.
This is what the poem by the author is all about as she describes the various ways of her love for her husband which makes the poem a perfectly romantic one.
