Disposition is termed as the end result of a prosecution. Conviction and Acquittal are the two common dispositions. Conviction occurs when the verdict of the court of law held someone to be guilty of any offence for which proceeding were initiated and Acquittal happens when the prosecutor fails to prove his case and the defendant is held innocent. Besides this there are many other alternatives available to dispose a case. Some of them are:
The New Jersey Controlled Dangerous Substances Act 51 has inserted provision under section 27 according to which in case an individual is consuming or possessing drugs and he is not a habitual offender then the criminal justice system has given an alternate that instead of prosecuting them, they are placed under supervisory treatment for 3 years and after successful completion of the treatment, all the criminal proceeding that were initiated against them is dismissed and they are discharged form their act (McKetin, Lubman, Lee, Ross, & Slade, 2011).
Non-habitual offenders who are charged with indictable offenses are provided with a chance to finish all the criminal proceedings initiated against them. Usually it lasts for one to three years and there are certain rules that are required to be followed (Kopak, 2019). In case the PTI is not being completed successfully than the case is again returned back to the trial list. It is used as a curb to prevent future criminal behaviour.
