When the term “Monomyth” is referred to the students themselves, the students get the idea that the term monomyth refers to the hero’s journey or the journey which is undertaken by a particular hero in the epics and in other stories. In other words, the concept of the monomyth deals with the adventures the hero or the protagonist undertakes in his journey to achieve a particular goal or to save the day. The concept of monomyth was made popular by Campbell, Erich Neumann and other scholars themselves.
In order for the readers to understand how the concept of monomyth applies to the myth of Perseus, it is important for the students to know about the myth a little bit. Perseus, as it is known by the readers themselves, was the founder of the Mycenae and the Perseid. He was also well-known in the mythology for having slain the monster Gorgon Medusa for Polydectes as well as saved the Andromeda from the monster Cetus (Brenner, 2014).
By analysing the myth of Perseus, it is found by the readers themselves that the concept of monomyth is present in Perseus and his myth. The monomyth follows the structure as predicted by the scholar Campbell himself. The first instance of the monomyth that the readers can identify in the myth itself is the theme of the separation, as the readers find that Perseus had been ordered by King Polydectes to bring him the head of the monster Gorgon Medusa. This also signifies the call to adventure for the protagonist of the myth (Jameson, 2014). The second instance comes from Perseus’ acceptance of the call to adventure as he accepts the job given to him by King Polydectes. Moreover, the concept of monomyth is also present in the way in which Perseus receives help from the supernatural beings like Gods named Athena and Hermes who had been commanded by Zeus himself. The fourth instance of the monomyth can be found in Crossing the Threshold, where readers fins that Perseus was given the task of finding the Gorgon sisters, before he could reach and kill Medusa himself. It is in accordance with the hero’s journey that the readers fond that Perseus is unaware of where to find the Gorgon sisters themselves (Brenner, 2014).
The next part of the monomyth comes when it is found by the readers themselves that Perseus manages to find the gorgons and kills Medusa himself. This forms the first part of the myth of Perseus. In the second part if the myth, monomyths are also identified by the readers themselves. In this case, the monomyth, is noticed by the readers in the theme of the initiation. This is evidenced by the tests/ ordeals which Perseus had to face while finding the Gorgons and killing Medusa. The readers get the idea that Perseus had to behead Medusa by attacking her from behind and hiding her beheaded face by using the Helmet of Invisibility. The next part of the myth deals with Perseus and his return home (Slater, 2014). The readers get the idea that along the way he kills a sea monster in Ethiopia and saves Andromeda, marries her and turns her brother into stone. On returning home, he finds his mother and Dictys sent to refuge, which makes him turn Polydectes to stone and appoint the kingdom to Dictys (Jameson, 2014).
The next part of the monomyth deals with the atonement with his father, as Perseus keeps his father’s head with that of Medusa. Other themes like the theme of the ultimate elixir or the boon and the theme of return also plays a role in the myth of Perseus himself.
As the myth of Perseus is analysed by the readers in accordance with Campbell’s notion of the monomyth, it is seen by the readers themselves that the concept of the monomyth as predicted by Campbell himself, is completely present in the Greek Myth of Perseus. All the components proposed by Campbell can be found by the readers of the myth from the beginning of the myth to the end of the myth (Brenner:2014).
Thus, from the above discussions, it can be concluded that the Greek myth of Perseus is indeed one of the well-known myths in the Greek mythology. It follows the Campbell’s notion of monomyths right from the beginning of the play to the ending of the play itself. That is why it is known as one of the finest plays in the Greek mythology itself.
