This reflective writing is based on reflecting on my learning related to listening skills. While reflecting on communication skills, I will analyse my current listening strengths and challenging areas. Subsequently, I will develop goals based on my current strengths and weaknesses and thereby develop ‘Tips to Self-paper’ for guiding my future self. This self-analysis and reflective writing are aimed at guiding my focus on my long-term goals. Based on (Brownell, 2015), I am writing this self-analysing paper in order to demonstrate how much the textbook knowledge I understood and applied for myself. In this way, with the help of this reflective writing, I will demonstrate how gained knowledge throughout the course can be applied to my own life (Browning & Cunningham, 2012).
After learning into the communication course, I realized that communication skills play a vital role in personal and professional life. I consider that speaking as well as listening skills comes under the art of conveying thoughts effectively. As mentioned in the book written by (Brownell, 2015), listening seems the core element in demonstrating better communication. In order to convey thoughts efficiently, one needs to listen effectively. According to (Brownell, 2015), without effective listening, effective communication cannot happen. I observed that proper and effective listening is not only beneficial for professional and academic life bit it carries equal importance for growing personal relations (Hynes, 2012). After learning into this module, I learned that if I can improve my listening skills then I can conquer so many difficult communication battles and relationship conflicts. I believe that listening skills can be improved with the help of enhancing and developing self-monitoring and self-analytical skills. I started to monitor myself after reading and studying the lessons from the book written by (Brownell, 2015). I also realized the importance of constructive feedback in the context of the listening part of the communication. In this context, I find approaches like interpersonal and intrapersonal communication useful for improving my listening skills.
In the context of listening skills significance, I used to be a great communicator as I already possess good listening skills. Based on (Brownell, 2015), I believe that for talking in front of some decent audience, good listening skills are essential. Earlier I was not aware of the fact that good communication’s major aspect depends on listening skills. Now that I know the fact hence I have started to work on my listening skills in so many good ways. Based on (A Petrovici, 2014), I understood that for becoming an excellent communicator, one needs to become a good self-observer first. As stated by (Brownell, 2015), listening part of the communication cannot be easily improved without monitoring myself. Here, I would like to mention that I often work on my communication skills by interacting with my family members whenever I am off to work and professional life. In addition to that, interacting with intellectual friends and colleagues also makes me feel better in terms of communication skills development.
I learned about how to improve listening effectiveness while realizing the importance of active listening. Earlier, I was not aware of the reasons behind active listening. Later then, based on (Brownell, 2015), I got to know that for accomplishing tasks as well as building relationships, effective listening is the key to success. With the help of Hurier's approach to listening, I learned about various components of this model (Brownell, 2015). Moreover, I learned to apply the Hurier model for utilising personal listening filters for workplace listening purposes. This learning module made me understand about myself being a good listener. Several communication skills like listening to self, constructive feedback, self-monitoring, listening assessment and many more made me learn about listening effectiveness which is helpful to be successful in modern workplaces. Furthermore, I got to know about several theoretical perspectives of effective communication (Brownell, 2015). In my opinion, theoretical perspectives of communication include early perspectives, listening-centered communication and relational perspectives which allow one to communicate effectively in both personal and professional settings. Thus, diverse principles and applications related to communication were useful for effective listening, hearing, and remembering. Now, I believe that the process of interpreting requires some principles to be used effectively. Such principles of interpreting contain both verbal and non-verbal communication skills and knowledge (Brownell, 2015).
In this way, based on reflection and self-analysis I have prepared my future action plan so that I can always improve myself from the communication skills perspective. Here, I planned to improve my listening skills while improving my Self-Monitoring skills. Furthermore, based on (Bodie, 2012), I will use Constructive Feedback to improve my personality more day-by-day. I will also work on mediated communication while limiting my usage of symbols. Based on (Hargie, 2016), I will improve the overall quality of my internal speech so as to enhance my speaking and listening skills.
In whole, reflecting on communication skills specifically on listening skills made me learn about myself. With the help of reading and updating my self-knowledge, I found so many important things about myself that are ultimately useful for future career development. I found my current strengths and weaknesses in terms of communication. Subsequently, I set some specific goals after learning throughout the course. In this way, based on this course learning I will improve myself as per the evolved action plan for future career endeavours.
