This paper discusses the fact that how the departmental stores and the supermarkets are utilizing various tactics in order to spy on the customers. The stores are utilizing the information about the customers in their favor. The stores utilize such information to their own advantage. This concept has been discussed in the book “The Aisles Have Eyes” by the author named Joseph Turrow. It has been discussed in the book that how the supermarkets and the departmental stores have been infringing the privacy and personal information in relation to the customers in order to sell products to such customers more effectively.
Hence, the first idea or notion that may be central and crucial in relation to the arguments forwarded by the author is that what does the term ‘personalization’ actually mean and how the customers react to such personalization of the customers by the retail stores, the supermarkets and the departmental stores. The term ‘personalization’ in the world of marketing and the retail business may be referred to the process in relation to the utilization of the personal and private data and information regarding the shoppers and the customers in order to provided and deliver tailored experiences to such customers and shoppers of any particular product in the world of the retail business. The personalization of the customers in the world of retail business aims at serving each particular individual, that is, the customer, on the basis of the behavior, needs and the requirements of the customers (Turow, p. 84). As per a research conducted in this regard, it has been discovered that a quantum of ninety per cent concerning the shoppers and customers have found the idea of personalized retailing to be tempting and attractive. According to the Utilitarian theory, people generally seek maximum benefits for themselves. Hence, applying the utilitarian theory it may be stated that personalization of the information regarding customers maximize the contentment and comfort for the general population.
The second idea or notion that may be central and crucial to the arguments that are forwarded by the author in this regard is the balance in relation to the tailored prices of products and in what direction is the retail business headed to because of such personalization of the information in relation to the customers. It may be said that the companies and the organizations have portrayed the ideas of personalization by the retailers as a seamless bridge or connection between the shoppers or the customers and the smooth selling of the products as required by the shoppers or the customers (Turow, p. 86). As per the global head of the retail consultant organization named Accenture, the retailers are able to provide and deliver a seamless bridge in relation to the shoppers and the customers. An article regarding trade in relation to the organization named Target mentioned that the businesses of the retail world had developed plans in order to strengthen the technology (Turow, p. 87). According to the utilitarian theory if any action provides maximum benefit to maximum people then it shall be considered as morally right even when the action is wrong. Contradicting this, the deontological theory suggests that morality of any action is dependent on the fact that whether the action is right or wrong and not on the consequences. Following the utilitarian theory the action of the retail businesses may be considered to be right as it provides maximum benefits to both retailers and customers. However, as per the deontological theory, the actions of the retail businesses are wrong even if the customers and the businesses are benefitted by such actions.
The third idea that may be crucial to the arguments forwarded by the author is that how the app regarding the retail organizations have helped such organizations to gather private information about their shoppers and the customers. It has been discussed in the book that how the popular app of the organization named Target has helped the customers to aggregate discounts, compare coupons to products of other various retailers and discover such products with the help of a map in the aisles (Turow, p. 171). Through such app, the customers are able to communicate with the retailers to receive their required products at the best possible price and as per their needs (Turow, p. 176). The deontological theory suggests that morality of any action is dependent on the fact that whether the action is right or wrong and not on the consequences. According to the deontological theory, the actions of the retail businesses in relation to collecting the private data regarding the customers without any permission are wrong even if the customers and the businesses are benefitted by such actions.
As per the discussion, the fact that made an impact on one’s thinking process is that presently, how easy it is for the retail businesses to collect private information regarding the customers. It is very disturbing to know that the retailers have access to monitor each and every move of any particular customer or a shopper.
